RIG GALLERY
Since characters had 3 distinct shoulder placements, we initially created 1 rig and would move the shoulders using additive layers once in-engine. Eventually this solution created more problems than solutions and robbed the animators of a crucial WYSIWYG element, essential for good character animation. It was eventually decided that having distinct bones for each set of arms was preferred so we re-designed the rig to accomodate for this.
I revised the rig have 3 set of arms in a single rig and parented the high and low set to the middle one. This allowed the animators to animate the middle set most of the time and adjust the high and low set for specific poses. This allowed animators full WYSIWYG while NOT tripling their workload.
Small run down of the rig. We used blendshape to animated facial expressions which allowed character designers to not be constraints by facial structures.
We previously had more distinct character design with tentacles but it was eventually cut.
